The Creation of Guoache Paint Made from Repurposed Makeup Powders as A Reducing Makeup Waste through A Sustainable Approach
The use of makeup and cosmetics has been increasing rapidly, influenced by trends and social media. However, this rise in consumption has also led to a large amount of waste, with unused or expired products and their packaging contributing to landfills, pollution, and harm to both the environment and human health. In Indonesia, the situation is no diKerent, as cosmetic waste continues to grow while recycling solutions remain limited. This developed product oKers an eco-friendly gouache paint made by repurposing expired and unused makeup powders. This sustainable art medium focuses on stabilizing cosmetic pigments with gum Arabic binder, honey, and calcium carbonate, to form an artist-grade, vibrant, safe, and versatile paints suitable for posters, comics, and other artworks. Performance testing assessed the resulting gouache's pigment load, lightfastness, and color intensity against commercial standards. Results confirm that repurposed makeup powders give out an acrylic and watercolor texture, viable, high-quality product, demonstrating a practical and sustainable circular economy solution for cosmetic disposal within the art community. Through this developed product, the aim is to reduce cosmetic waste, minimize chemical pollution, and provide a sustainable product that benefits both artists and the environment.
