Siren Of Hope: Community Driven Landslide Alerts for Nepal's Monsoon Prone Areas
Abstract The country Nepal is a small landlocked and beautiful country which suffers from many challenges due to its Geography and frequent landslides which occurs during monsoon season killing many peoples. To tackle all this problem this project proposes " Siren Of Hope" it is a community-centered landslide early warning system which is designed for Nepal's vulnerable remote hill communities in where conventional technology often fails during monsoon seasons. It is Inspired by recent sad incident which including the Ilam landslide that claimed 39 lives and displaced 276 families, We have approach in this project is to prioritize human trust and response over the complexity. In this project a 110dB siren which is for immediate local alerts and SMS notification functions to everyone phones without the help of internet connection. The system will have a Aduino uno as a microcontroller, the capacitive soil sensor, A SIM900A GSM module for SMS alert when there is no internet connection. The sensors nodes (4-5 units) will be strategically placed and monitors the soil moisture and the rainfall at the critical landslide initiation points on the vulnerable slopes. Each sensors node will be costing around NPR 7,200 and it can be maintained by the local youth volunteers with the help of proper training to identify traditional warning signs. The project's core is the community centered warning system based on physical sensor nodes here the deep learning component mention in the project will represent the future improvements when we can work in partnership with the Nepal's Department of Mines and Geology data. The visual representation will show the potential solution for advanced early alert wih no relying on complex technology which will fail during Nepal's harsh monsson conditions. This project only not being a technical technical solution but also a bridge between modern engineering and Nepals's wisdom, like by creating a alert system which will work when there is no power available, without the network connectivity and it providing extra precious minutes to the family to reach to safety.
