Equabin is an IoT based intelligent dustbin system to monitor and manage waste. It is developed using a microcontroller which incorporates several sensors, communication technologies, and a cloud database. Bins have a dual-sensor design combining infrared sensors to detect the height of waste materials and a load cell to measure the weight, which is more accurate than designs that utilize single-sensors. The sensors of toxic gases monitor harmful gases like methane and ammonia, which allows to announce the risks quickly and minimize environmental and security hazards. There is also a rain sensor and temperature-humidity sensor that monitors the environment and enables the automatic closing of the lid in the rain and active working based on the weather. EquaBin has a hierarchical IoT architecture comprising of Major, Sub and Minor dustbins. Major dustbins are networked and serve the purpose of data aggregation, both in sending their own sensor data and the data sent to them by Sub-dustbins via ESP-NOW. Sub-dustbins lack internet connectivity and rely on Major dustbins on cloud communication. Minor dustbins are autonomous, network connected and not connected to Sub-dustbins. GPS modules also allow tracking the location, whereas LTE is the technology that ensures the stable transmission of data even in those areas where no Wi-Fi connection. A cloud database stores all sensor data, such fill levels, waste weight, gas concentrations, and geolocation. This allows monitoring in real time, past data analysis, recognizing overflow or dangerous gas concentration at an early stage, and optimizing routes automatically. The system has a mobile app for administrators and waste collectors, which provides live dashboards, safety notifications, control of operations, and automatic creation of optimal routes of waste collection, depending on the status of the bins, amount of gas, position, and weather. A web app will enable users to find the closest dustbin, check the content and gas volume, and use the built-in AI chatbot to get directions and support. Altogether, EquaBin provides a scalable and dependable system of smart waste management based on sensor fusion, hierarchical IoT networking, cloud intelligence, and role-specific digital platforms.
